In this video, I show you how I am pruning my apple tree that I planted from seed four years ago to increase apple production, getting bigger yields in the future. Pruning apple trees is an important part of the apple-growing process, and it's something I'm learning as I go. My knowledge of pruning apple trees is relatively limited, but I am learning as I go. I started pruning my apple tree a week ago by snipping off any weak or dead branches. Then, I pruned off any crossing branches and branches that were directed toward the centre of the tree. I tried to focus on creating a solid scaffolding of branches spiraled around the trunk of the tree. I have chosen to prune this apple tree in central leader form, so I had to remove some side branches that were competing with the leading stem. I topped the central leader as it was looking quite flimsy and I want to encourage new growth. Finally, I cut a few inches off the ends of each of the branches, ensuring that buds were facing away from the tree because this is the direction I want shoots to grow. If you're wondering how to grow apple trees from seed at home, make sure you stick around because I will be doing updates every few months. So far I have been amazed how well I have been able to grow this apple tree from seed, it is growing quite nicely. I don't expect this apple tree to produce sweet fruit, as it was not grafted, but still it's a fun experiment to keep me busy and the apple tree looks nice in my backyard.
