@Anna, 13, got bitten by a tick - today she is paralyzed - Expressen.SE 12-11-2017
Two years ago, 13-year-old Anna Kretz got bitten by a tick. Video above in Swedish. Just weeks later, she had lost her mobility and ended up in coma. "I would give anything to know what's happening in her mind, because we do not really know," says mother Pernilla Andersson. Summer 2015 was Anna Kretz, 13, eleven years old, and began promising to culminate in his cousin in Danderyd, outside of Stockholm, and attending a shelter camp outside the hometown of Västerås. At the end of June, she had flu-like symptoms and pain in the joints - something like her parents Johan Krantz, 53, and Pernilla Andersson, 52, initially did not worry about. But when Anna's condition did not improve, they decided to go to the emergency room. "Anna had a mark on the cheek that I showed to the emergency staff before we got home by taxi," says Mom Pernilla. The next day, the situation became considerably more serious. "I had to help Anna to the toilet. She could not keep food or touch her arms, and also had severe headache, says Pernilla. Presented in coma Anna was taken to the emergency room again. "When I got to the hospital, she stood with doctors around him. They tried to make her move, but all she could do was sticking out her tongue, says Dad Johan. Just after an hour, Anna began to cramp and end up in a life-threatening epileptic condition. In order to spare her brain, she was introduced into an induced coma and was placed on the neurointensive in Uppsala. "At first, doctors did not know if she would ever wake up again. It was terribly anxious, says Johan. The test results showed that Anna had suffered from TBE, a virus disease spread by ticks. The disease had caused a brain inflammation. "We still do not know when she got bitten, maybe it was at the shelter or when she visited her cousin in Danderyd," says Johan. The parents were allowed to spend several weeks with their daughter at the hospital. "We did not know if she would survive. It was terrible, very unreal. A horror experience. It's probably the worst I've been with, tells Mom Pernilla. "But then, Anna survived and in some way it is the great joy in the whole. Lost motion After Anna had woken up, she spent nine months at the children's clinic in Västerås. Today she is 13 years old, lives at home and has personal assistance 24 hours a day. "Anna is better, but has not regained so much of her mobility. She has tomb epilepsy, difficulty in breathing and often pneumonia. Food she gets through a button on her stomach, says Johan. He tells the daughter to practice communicating through an eye-controlled computer. - And by looking left or right, she can answer yes and no questions. Pernilla tells her that she is often reading high for her daughter, and also watching movies together. "It's very rewarding to share a movie experience with Anna. She is quite involved and we look at each other and tanner. It's not something you need language for. "Have the humor left" According to parents, brain inflammation has affected Annas motive ability, but not her personality. "Cognitive, she's all along. The school subjects she was good at before she is good at even now. She also has her humor, says Johan. "Anna is happy very often, which can actually surprise me," says Pernilla. Too often, everyday is very difficult. "Anna can be quite frustrated, and is not so fond of not being able to shower herself. She thinks she's still crazy. Sometimes I talk about things that have been before, and then she may be so sad, says Pernilla. "In fact, I would give anything to know what's happening in her mind, because we do not really know. She hopes to inform other people about the risks of ticks, and wishes everyone to vaccinate against TBE. - That's why I want to talk about this so nobody else needs to experience what Anna has suffered. It's very important to me. Translated from swedish article: https://www.expressen.se/nyheter/anna-13-blev-biten-av-fasting-i-dag-ar-hon-forlamad/ TBE is a viral disease virus that can cause inflammation in the brain, meninges or in both places. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tick-borne_encephalitis
