They are engaged in processing of crude oil in the refinery and marketing of the refined products for the sale to general public across the country. Refinery is a large industrial complex where various cutting edge technologies are utilised to process the crude oil. End result is the conversion of crude oil into marketable products like Petrol, Diesel, LPG, Lube Oil, Kerosene, Aviation turbine fuel. There are 23 refineries across the country. Out of which eleven refineries are operated by Indian oil and its group companies. Three refineries each are operated by Bharat petroleum and Hindustan petroleum. No need to say, Indian oil holds 45% of the market share in the country. Since every state and territory do not have a refinery and hence transportation of refined products by each company to every state of the country would demand huge financial obligation and that is why these oil companies engage in exchange of refined products with same specifications near to their installations amongst each other. This prevents huge cost of transportation and yield logistical benefits to the end customers. Refining technology used by the oil companies are more or less same. Configuration of refinery changes if the desired product range is different. This means that refined products sold by either IOCL, BPCL and HPCL are of more or less same quality. Since Indian oil corporation limited is the front downstream oil companies in the country, It also gets the backing of the union government for any inter governmental agreement with foreign companies.
