Why A.R. Rahman Converted to Islam: The transformation of the Mozart of India. The man today known as A.R. Rahman or Allahrakha Rahman, is India’s only Oscar winning composers till date. Beside his other achievements such as two Grammy Awards, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe, four National Film Awards, fifteen Filmfare Awards and fifteen Filmfare Awards South, Padma Bhushan, he was also awarded as third highest civilian award in 2010 by the Government of India. In 2009, Rahman was included on the Time 100 list of the world's most influential people. The UK-based world-music magazine Songlines named him one of "Tomorrow's World Music Icons" in August 2011. Rahman is one of the world's all-time best-selling recording artists. In a notable two-decade career, he has been acclaimed for redefining contemporary Indian film music and contributing to the success of several films. Rahman has become a notable humanitarian and philanthropist, donating and raising money for a number of causes and charities. Rahman's body of work for film and stage has given him the nickname of "the Mozart of Madras", and Tamil commentators and fans call him Isai Puyal (English: the Musical Storm). Rahman is married to Saira Banu and has three children: Khatija, Rahima and Ameen. Why A.R. Rahman Converted to Islam? He converted to Islam for several reasons: he didn’t like the name he was born with, he was looking for direction and purpose, he wanted to get a handle on his professional future and his spiritual-minded mother had met, and gained immense succor, from a Sufi saint, peer Karimullah Shah Qadri. His belief in spirituality helped him, when he and his family were facing hard times. In one interview, he said that he choose Islam with his own heart and the Sufi path of Islam spiritually lifted both his mother and him, and he felt that it was the best path for them, so they embraced Sufi Islam. He also said that once a Hindu astrologer suggested him Muslim names Abdul Rahman and Abdul Rahim suitable for him. He instantly loved the name Rahman and later her mother had this intuition that he should add Allahrakha [Protected by God], and that's how he became AR Rahman.
