With what do I serve you? شَيْءٌ يُبَرِّدُ غَلِيلِي، وَيُرْوِي عَطَشِي A thing that cools my body down and quenches my thirst. أَتُرِيدُ مَاءً بَارِدًا مِنْ هَذِهِ الْخَابِيَةِ أَمْ مَاءً سَاخِنًا مِنْ هَذِهِ. Do you want cold water from this jar or warm water from this one? أَعْطِنِي مَاءً بَارِدًا! Give me cold water! أَتُرِيدُهَا مَلِيئَةً بَقِيرَاطٍ أَمْ تُرِيدُ نِصْفَهَا بِنِصْفِ قِيرَاطٍ؟ Do you want it full (that costs) one carat (Arabic weight of 4 grains) or you want half of it (that costs) half carat? امْلَأْهَا يَرْحَمْكَ اللهُ! Fill it, please (may Allah’s mercy be upon you) تَفَضَّلْ! Please, take! بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate. الْحَمْدُ للهِ Praise be to Allah! أَنْتَ ظَمِئٌ حَقًّا! أَتُرِيدُهَا ثَانِيَةً؟ You are really thirsty. Do you want it again? أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَسْأَلَكَ عَنْ شَخْصٍ كُنْتُ أَعْرِفُهُ سَابِقًا. I want to ask you about a person that I knew earlier. عَلَّكَ غَرِيبٌ عَنْ بَغْدَادَ. It doesn’t seem like you’re from Baghdad (You look stranger in Baghdad). قَدِمْتُ مِنَ الْكُوفَةِ. I came from Kufah أَنَا أَبُو جَعْفَرَ السَّقَّاءُ. I’m Abu Jafar, the water carrier. أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَسْأَلَكَ. I want to ask you سَلْ يَا رَجُلْ سَلْ! Ask, man, ask! أَسْأَلُ عَنْ عَالِمٍ. I want to ask about a scholar الْخُوَارِزْمِيَّ؟ Al-Khwarizmi? مَا قَصَدْتُ هَذَا. I don’t intend this. إِذَنْ تَقْصِدُ جَابِرَ بْنَ حَيَّان. So, you intend Jabir ibn Hayyan. مَا عَنَيْتُ هَذَا وَلَا ذَاكَ. I don’t intend either this or that. أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَسْأَلَكَ عَنْ فَقِيهٍ كَانَ يُقِيمُ فِي بَغْدَادَ مُنْذُ سَنَوَاتٍ وَانْقَطَعَتْ أَخْبَارُهُ. I want ask you about a jurist that was living in Baghdad (many) years ago and no news (nothing) has been heard about him. أَلَا تَعْرِفُ دَارَهُ؟ Don’t you know his home? لُوْ كُنْتُ أَعْلَمُ لَمَا سَأَلْتُكَ. If I knew, I wouldn’t have asked you. ضَآلَتُكَ صَعْبَةُ الْمَنَالِ يَا صَدِيقِي. What you’re looking for is difficult to find, my friend. فَبَغْدَادُ كَبِيرَةٌ وَنَاسُهَا كُثُرٌ.
