Mainly Scottish Folksongs's video: Helen Of Kirkconnel Lea A sad song

@Helen Of Kirkconnel Lea (A sad song!)
Helen Of Kirkconnel Lea (Fleming's Lament) (A sad song!) During the reign of Mary Queen of Scots, (14 December 1542 to 24 July 1567) a young girl, Helen Irving of Kirkconnel, Annandale Scotland, chose between two lovers, and decided on the one she really loved, Adam Fleming. A few days later as they strolled together along the banks of the river Kirtle, Helen suddenly noticed the rival lover, Bell of blackhouse, taking aim at Fleming with his gun. She threw herself onto Adam and was instantly killed by the bullet meant for him. In the song, Fleming crosses the river and slays the murderer, but in reality he pursued him throughout Europe, eventually catching and killing him near Madrid in Spain. He then returned to Scotland where he expired on Helen's grave and was buried along side her, where his tombstone still reads, "Hic Jacet Adamus Fleming." (Here Lies Adam Fleming) An alternative version says that: Adam took his bloody revenge and then fled to Spain but returned years later to die on Helen’s grave where he is now buried. You can see their tombstones at Kirkconnel at a ruined church near the village of Eaglesfield just off the M74. Dumfriesshire.
