Le Départ, c'est l'histoire d'Adil, un jeune garçon qui passe l'été 2004 à suivre, à la télévision, les exploits son idole, le coureur Hicham El Guerrouj. Son père et son frère arrivent alors de France, et vont bouleverser son destin. Le réalisateur marocain Saïd Hamich confie s'être inspiré de sa propre histoire pour construire le scénario du film.
