The Winning Against Wildings research programme seeks to better understand the causes, consequences, and management interventions needed for wilding conifers. Funded through MBIE’s Endeavour Fund, this five-year programme has been set up to have direct benefits to current wilding conifer management through the National Wilding Conifer Control Programme. As the Winning Against Wildings programme will wrap up in late 2021, we are now in the exciting phase of implementing results and realising the applications of this research. In this webinar, we provides a brief overview of the why wildings have been called New Zealand’s ‘worst weed problem’, and provide some highlights of what work has been done on wildings so far. We also highlighted how connecting research to management and policy has been developed through the National Wilding Conifer Control Programme and the New Zealand Wilding Conifer Group. Finally, we finished the webinar with a discussion of what is next and the remaining gaps in our understanding of wilding conifer invasions.
