@LINKOnline Webinar: Te Reo o Te Repo – The Voice of the Wetland, a cultural wetland handbook
Presented by Yvonne Taura, Mahuru Wilcox, and Beverley Clarkson Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research World Wetlands Day (WWD) 2 February celebrates the adoption of the international convention for repo (wetlands) and provides a focus for local activities and information about the value of repo in our landscapes. This is a perfect way to reflect on and share some of our relevant research in this short webinar. Wetland research at Manaaki Whenua aims to help New Zealanders by providing scientifically-based tools and guidelines to identify, manage, and restore wetlands. In recent years there has been an emphasis on Vision Mātauranga, and multiple exciting collaborative resources focused on cultural aspects have been/are being produced. Te Reo o Te Repo – The Voice of the Wetland, first published in 2017, was created collaboratively by Manaaki Whenua and Waikato-Tainui. The first of its kind, this cultural wetland handbook has become a valued resource that responds to specific needs identified by Māori in developing culturally focused research projects and collating best practice restoration techniques. It helps reconnect and increase the health and well-being of repo in their rohe (region). Tuihonoa Te Reo o Te Repo – Online educational wetland resources, to be launched on WWD 2021, was created collaboratively by Manaaki Whenua and the Science Learning Hub. The bilingual digital resources draw extensively on Māori-led research published in Te Reo o Te Repo. They are developed alongside a selection of kura kaupapa Māori (Māori medium schools), to ensure the resources meet the needs of kaiako (teachers), tauira (students), and wider whānau (local communities), to inspire kura to become kaitiaki (guardians) of their own repo, and to encourage the pursuit of science pathways. Te Reo o Te Repo Volume II, currently under development, continues the inspired work of the first volume.
