Remote sensing is providing unprecedented levels of data on what our world “looks” like. New sensors and big data capabilities can now be brought together at multiple scales to help us understand the planet. The Advanced Remote Sensing of Aotearoa research program is developing methods to make use of data from satellites and other sources to better understand New Zealand’s vegetation and land cover. This programme delivers techniques and approaches that inform the on-going development of New Zealand’s Land Cover Database. John Dymond will outline recent work on integrating temporal spectral signatures, to bring together vegetation plot information alongside vegetation structure seen from LiDAR. This work will be used in developing several new national applications and layers.
