Lokur is a graduate of Delhi University and was enrolled as a lawyer in 1977 and designated a Senior Advocate in 1997. Justice Lokur was appointed as Additional Solicitor General of India and later a Judge of Delhi High Court in February 1999. He has been the Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, Chief Justice of Gauhati, and Andhra Pradesh High Courts. He was appointed as Judge of the Supreme Court of India in June 2012 and retired on 30th December 2018. He was a member of the Mediation & Conciliation Project Committee since its inception and later it's chairperson; judge in charge of the E-Committee of the Supreme Court for the computerization of all the courts in India; one-Man Committee to suggest improvements in the working of the Homes and organizations under the Juvenile Justice Act and Rules and Executive Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee and National Legal Services Authority. Justice Lokur was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of Fiji in 2019. Presently, he has a professional chamber practice and is an independent arbitrator.
