Marc Martel's video: Cu l otro Rey How Many Kings - Spanish

Every songwriter dreams to have a song of theirs take on a life of its own. I feel so fortunate to have been able to write such a song back in 2007 in my first ever Christmas song, “How Many Kings.” I remember vividly the first time my band performed “HMK” at a venue in Florida. After the show, a man approached me excitedly, saying this song was going to reach a lot of people, and cause them to marvel about Christmas is a new way. Sure enough, here we are, 13 years later, and a song I wrote in about 3 hours one afternoon in my bedroom in Franklin, Tennessee, is still finding new life among people all over the world. This is my first experience recording one of my songs in another language. If you know my background, you’d expect that to be French! Yet, it was pretty amazing to get to sing my own lyrics in Spanish, a language I’ve become more familiar with over recent years, having toured Mexico multiple times. We had a talented translator interpret the lyric in a way that not only captured the message, but its poetic meter and imagery as well; no simple task. Afterwards, a Spanish singer recorded herself singing it, so that I could be sure my pronunciation was as accurate as my less-than-basic grasp of the language could muster. I hope my diction passes the test, and allows what I originally wrote over a dozen years ago to shine through, and that “How Many Kings” finds a new, cozy spot on the holiday playlists of the Spanish-speaking world for years to come! That would be muy bien.
