Marc Sinan's video: Marc Sinan Company: KOMITAS Study I

Documentation of my installation "Komitas Study I", commissioned by Maxim Gorki Theater for "Berliner Herbstsalon", November 2013 Marc Sinan's film begins at the hills around the Black Sea. In the middle of a rural landscape dotted with modern-day apartment houses we spot a derelict building with walled and boarded up doors and windows. The interior discloses wall paintings and ornaments of a monastery. Photographs of Komitas, the founder of Armenian classical music, as well as a folk song, that he sung give the viewers a sense of the place. Sinan's installation traces the remnants of a lost culture that - even an entire century after the genocide of 1915 - has not ceased to trouble Turkish identity.
