Live at Ballhaus Naunynstrasse, Berlin 4.11.2011 MARC SINAN COMPANY Marc Sinan, Gitarren -- Claudio Puntin, Klarinetten -- Rolf Zielke, Cembalo Heinrich Köbberling, Schlagzeug -- Videoinstallation In the ancient world, the mighty river Amu Darja between Afghanistan and Tajikistan was known by its Greek name Oxus. The story of the Oxus treasure is just one of the many legends surrounding the river: at the close of the ­nineteenth century, a priceless collection of golden art objects dating from the pre-Christian era was found in the river. For the OKSUS project, guitarist and composer Marc Sinan, whose earlier piece Hasretim was awarded the 2011 special prize of the German UNESCO Commission, travelled through Uzbekistan with Markus Rindt, director of the Dresden Sinfoniker, to find and film musicians working in musical traditions that reach back through many centuries and have always been cosmopolitan in character. Sinan now presents the first results of his research at the Ballhaus Naunynstrasse in the form of chamber music studies for the guitar, clarinet, harpsichord and percussion, accompanied by video installations. The music overlaps, counters and comments on the video material in a searching analysis that goes far beyond what is usually defined as world music. The music Sinan recorded on his journey along the banks of the legendary river appears as yet another treasure its waters have bequeathed to civilization.
