Marina Martinez-Bateman's video: Community First

Growing up marginalized, we're taught to survive, and to believe that we deserve such an incredibly small rate of pay. I've always told people in my workshops that if they know me, there's no way they could ever charge too much for their work. Marginalized people are shoved into the most scarce parts of our society and made to believe that, not only are we not allowed to ask for more than the bare minimum, we're also taught to police each other into asking for less. Meanwhile, the skills and the knowledge we have, our lived experiences can never be replicated by any class or book. Our knowledge is unique and specific in a market where unique and specific are massively valuable. As a community first organization, New Coyote has curated our client list to center high-impact organizations who continue to lessen harm within the industry while also producing real, long-lasting results for their service populations. We've shown what can be done when an organization rejects toxic working culture, closes the pay gap, and focuses on giving workers what they need to create innovative leaps rather than exploiting their labor and driving them to burn out. Now that we have proof of concept, we're going to expand. The intention for New Coyote is to be an industry leader for both wages and working conditions. We want other employers in the Pacific Northwest to see the results from paying more money for fewer hours and greater worker autonomy. Together, we can create the world we want to see, and that starts by recognizing our own worth and the worth of the people who work for us.
