The Bass Rocks Basking Sharks Gloucester, MA May 15, 2015 Two basking sharks feeding off the coast of Gloucester, MA. The basking shark is the second largest fish in the sea, after the whale shark. Like its larger cousin, the basking shark is a filter feeder, extracting plankton from the water as it passes through its mouth and gills. A typical adult basking shark is 20 to 25 feet long, and weighs five tons. These specimens appear to be that size; the lobster boat at the 00:41 mark is approximately 30 feet long.
