Singapore's national mascot is the Merlion. It is shown as a legendary animal with a lion's head and a fish's body. It is frequently utilised to represent both the city state and its people in sports teams, advertising, branding, tourism, and as a national personification since it has a strong symbolic meaning for Singapore and Singaporeans as a whole. The Merlion was initially used as the tourism board's logo in Singapore. Mer, which refers to the sea, and "lion" are combined in its name. The fish body symbolises Singapore's beginnings as a fishing community when it was known as Temasek, which in Javanese means "sea town." The lion's head symbolises Singapore's former name, Singaporepura, which translates to "lion city" or "kota singa." The logo for the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), in use from 26 March 1964 to 1997, was created by Alec Fraser-Brunner, a member of the Souvenir Committee and curator of the Van Kleef Aquarium.
