The Melinda Looi Couture 2023 Show: The collection is an explosion of vision and invention inspired by the works of artist Maya Luebbert, Melinda's daughter. It is a beautiful tale of mother and daughter, the marriage of new artistry with couture. It is also a tribute to Malaysian craftsmanship, as well as Pleats by Looi, from which Melinda Looi started her fashion journey. “It’s a family affair this time around. It’s a very sentimental collection for me— it’s emotional. My family, my kids, they were very involved in this collection. Seeing how everyone comes together to create something is just truly amazing.” Melinda states. It is a collection to celebrate togetherness and to highlight the collective strength. Fashion isn't just about the designer, it's also about the people who help bring the designer’s vision to life: the weavers, the craftsmen, the enthusiasts, Melinda's family, and her kids. It is to honour those who have contributed to Melinda’s success as a designer for she would not be where she is today without their support over the years. The campaign sends out the message to the next generation: evolution is important. Melinda travelled to Sarawak in late August to document the journey of her couture collection courtesy with Malaysia Airlines. Throughout the collection you will find an interwoven journey of classical tradition and the contemporary; Malaysia as seen through Melinda Looi's eyes, imaginative incorporations of traditional rattan weaving, tenun, batik and songket with technology incorporated garments, all infused with vivid motifs from Maya’s sketchbook. There are three unique pieces made of upcycled material from Malaysia Aviation Group, as well as six exclusively produced garment collaborations with Barbie that will be presented in actual size on the model as well as the miniature and special mechanisms provided by UOW Malaysia KDU University College attached to some outfits. This spectacular fashion show took place on October 8th at Workshop 3, Sentul Depot. The rich historical setting of Sentul Depot is an ideal complement to the event. The century old railway depot which has been preserved and transformed into a creative hub fits the notion of Melinda wanting to preserve heritage by pushing the boundaries of traditional craftsmanship to make our exquisite Malaysian crafts more relevant & recognized globally.
