The Kadota fig is a cultivar that has been around for at least 2,000 years. The famous Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder mentioned this cultivar among the 30 or so he had learned of. Figs are native to the Mediterranean region and Western Asia. Sumerian stone tablets dating back to 4,500 years ago record culinary use of figs, and remains of fig trees were found during excavations of Neolithic sites from 7,000 years ago. Some historians consider it the first of the domesticated crops. I transplanted my cutting from the nursery into heat-sterilized coco coir in 5-gallon/18.9 Liter pots after just three days, then applied dissolved Miracle Gro All Purpose Plant Food mixed with crushed multivitamin powder for fertilization and Bayer Advanced Insect, Disease, and Mite Control to nip any potential infestations or fungal infections in the bud. The manufacturer-suggested frequency of application for both of those products is once every two weeks.
