Attitude The White City vs. The Black City The attitude of the Black City was very depressing. Everyone was dirty and busy working all the time. Some just sat on the street with no job, let alone no food or money. The White City's atmosphere was very preppy. Everyone dressed in their best clothes to attend and only those who had a fair amount of money could even afford to go there. Most people were snobby at the fair- only worrying of their own problems. Reflections of the Names Architecture The Black City was the poverty stricken and industrial part of town. It was highly polluted. Everything in this area of Chicago was considered dirty; therefore, the name "Black City" seemed fit for the lower class part of Chicago. Occupants The area that was taken up by the World's Fair was called the White City. This matched well with the area because it was very clean. The White City was considered very high class. The feel of the area was very light, happy, and refined. This contrasted greatly with the aspects of the Black City. The White City was filled with extravagant, ornate structures. There was absolutely no holding back in the construction of the Exposition. Every building had some sort of extreme ornamentation. The architects of these buildings basically wanted to show off and spend as much money as they could. The White City mainly consisted of architects and investors. There were also the many employed by the World's Fair itself. Most of the people that spent time in the White City were filthy rich. They spent their money without hesitation. The Black City was full of immigrants. Most of the occupants of the Black City were unemployed and poverty stricken. Others may have worked as prostitutes, stock yard employees, or maybe even construction workers. Many working for the Union as well. Buildings in the Black City were very practical. There were no extra touches for looks and such. Houses sometimes didn't even have running water. The average family would own a one room apartment; which is entirely different than the lifestyle reflected by the White City. To Southern blacks, Chicago was the "Promised Land." Stories of big city life — jobs with good wages, homes with running water, and basic freedoms denied to blacks in the South — made the Northern city a prime destination for blacks coming from below the Mason-Dixon line.
