Mick McCleery's video: Love Being Lost 2005 - Billy Franks

@'Love Being Lost' (2005) - Billy Franks
THE STORY: Another 'first edit' of some older footage from 'my vault'. This one was shot back in February 2005 while we were in Golden, Colorado for a film festival where 'The Altruist' (http://youtu.be/DoVFBFVYiLA) was being shown. This was actually shot the same day that we shot the 'fireplace' scenes for 'Christmas in Jersey' (http://youtu.be/aMpx8YtjOJg). Basically we just jumped in the rental car (rental jeep really), drove up in the mountains and set Billy up, blasted the song from the car stereo and he played along. We ended up with 7 'runs' of the song and from that I cut this video. I actually started working on it about six months ago, but lacked a firm concept. This 'crawling' video is ultimately a simple idea, but it works well to use the original 4 by 3 video in the current 16 by 9 frame. TECHNICAL STUFF: Shot mini DV on the good old Panasonic DVX100 (at least that is my memory). And as stated above it was shot in the old 4 by 3 aspect ratio, and here I have about a 20% zoom which fills the frame a bit more (and allows me to crop and 'keyframe crop'). NEW TWISTS: No new twists since this is the first edit, but I can mention that my original idea was to use some photos from noted writer and travel photographer AC Weisbecker (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MxwkLnNAP8) who I had become an acquaintance of. I got as far as asking him for the use of the photos and he was happy to provide them. But as his stuff is mostly beach/tropical and this was all mountain footage I let that idea go. That does remind me though, when he released his book 'In Search of Captain Zero' back in 2001, I mentioned how this song 'Love Being Lost' felt like the theme song of the book. He agreed and for a time, at least, each book included a copy of this CD single. Good times! REFLECTION: It's surely a simple video, but short, sweet and effective (I think). Lyrically, the song remains one of my all time Billy favorites (right up there with 'Sacred Art of Leaving' - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwQug5a6Mxc&feature=share&list=PL72F16C411451B868), and I'm happy that I was finally able to put the visuals I shot to this fantastic song. Enjoy, m mccleery
