Mick McCleery's video: How to Win Fiends Influence Phantoms 2022 - a 48hour film project Baltimore MD

@'How to Win Fiends & Influence Phantoms' (2022) - a 48hour film project (Baltimore, MD)
Winner - Best Costumes (Baltimore 48-hour Film Project - 2022) Winner - Best Make-up (Baltimore 48-hour Film Project - 2022) Required Elements (Baltimore 48-hour Film Project - 2022) Character: Nate Bellevue: How-To Author Prop: A Crab Hammer Line of Dialogue: “I know why you’re here!” THE PLOT: Nate Bellevue, noted 'How-to Author" provides tips and tricks to keep trick-or-treaters safe this upcoming Halloween. THE STORY (behind the movie): I was keen to continue doing at least one 48 Hour Film Project each Summer and had been keeping an eye on the Philly 48 for months… but they still hadn’t announced (and had not run for the last two years due to Covid) so by the time we got to July 1st I figured it was time to look to another city. Though I love the New Haven fest (and had participated in that for the two Covid Years) - the drive up is a bit more than I wanted to do (and the traffic!). So, I set my eyes on Baltimore (which I had last done in 2015). We assembled a team and Tony Schaivo and I drove down to the kick-off (the first one where you HAD to be there in person since Covid - but on the plus side Covid had also prompted the 48-Hour Film Project to begin online submissions so we didn't have to drive back down and onsite for the drop off - we got to do that over the web). As for Genres, we drew ‘Holiday Movie’ or ‘Comedy’... That’s one very general genre and one quite specific. We ended up doing both. For our Holiday we chose ‘Halloween’ and the Character of Nate Bellevue got to thinking about that classic self-help book ‘How to Win Friends and Influence People'. From there we were off and running. On a final note. After we did Baltimore, Philly did end up running later in the Summer and I was super tempted to throw in and do that one as well - but as it turns out there were just too many other things going on. Glad to have Philly back though, so I'm looking forward to it in 2023! TECHNICAL STUFF: Not too much new here. For the camera, we went with the good old Panasonic GH4. Edited on Premiere Pro. NEW TWISTS: Two things stick out here. As we were making a Halloween movie we relied quite heavily on costumes that all of us had over the years. So that was a big plus (even won us two awards!). And it is the first time that I used the prolific composer Kevin Macleod’s music in a movie. So that was a good experiment. REFLECTION: I do find that with each successive 48-hour movie I do, I'm less and less able to get as much done in the 48 hours - I fear this is age-related! But I’ll keep plugging away. This was the 17th one of these I have done since 2010 - I’d like to get to at least 20 before I think about retiring the 48 shorts. That’s it. Peace. m mccleery (9/28/22)
