Plan to Deputize and Arm Lake County, Florida Teachers School Board member Bill Mathias wants teachers and principals in Lake County to be armed with district-purchased guns, which they would carry on campus to protect students. Mathias discussed his idea Monday as armed deputies in Orange County began walking the hallways of public elementary schools in response to the Dec. 14 massacre in Newtown, Conn. Mathias said he wants the Lake school district to pay to train educators, who would be "deputized" and then issued guns that they would carry to class. The School Board will take up his proposal next week. Teachers and principals who volunteer would be trained by the Lake County Sheriff's Office at the expense of the school district. They also would have to pass a psychological test before becoming "auxiliary" officers with limited authority. Mathias envisions educators carrying the weapons around campus and into classrooms — starting first with the district's 20 elementary schools. He said gun safes could be provided for storage around the school. "For some, it just becomes part of their getting dressed in the morning," he told the Orlando Sentinel. Lake schools Superintendent Susan Moxley did not respond to a request for comment, and a spokesman said she would not address the issue in the newspaper before the School Board discussed it. School Board Chairwoman Kyleen Fischer also could not be reached for comment.
