Two to three mounds of earth, and nothing more. And two to three oaks that had once grown there, Their branches spread now, wide and proud and bold, And they rustle their leaves without any care, As to whose remains their old roots now hold. Nature is oblivious of the past, Of our spectral years as well, so it seems. But in her presence, so serene and vast, We vaguely sense ourselves as Nature’s dreams. One by one, without discrimination, When her brood’s done with useless heroism, She greets them all with her equal affection In her calming all-consuming abysm.
