MUSIC MONDAY Episode 15: In this episode, we explore music’s written language by introducing the children to the notes and staff or stave. A staff or stave in music is a set of five horizontal lines and four spaces each representing a different musical pitch. (in percussion instruments each line of space represents a different instrument) To help children grasp this concept, Mimi compares the reading of books to the reading of music and introduces the children to the names of the notes and their relationship to the staff. Gabi plays the xylophone to demonstrate note pitch in relationship to its position on the staff. Mimi and Gabo then play a listening game to help children recognize the sound of certain notes and where they are found on the staff. Things you can do at home to familiarize your child with the concept of notes on the staff 1.If you have written music and an instrument you can play a simple scale and show your child the notes that are written 2.If you don’t have music at home, you can find the music of a nursery rhyme of a familiar song online. You can show your child the notes and then sing the song while pointing to the notes. 3. Compare sentences in a book to a musical sentence. Explain that the notes are like individual words that when strung together make a musical phrase or sentence. Don't worry if your child doesn't understand this concept perfectly. The point is to expose them to the concept of written language in music and to help them understand that every note we hear in a song has a special place on the staff which we can read and play.
