Music Monday Episode 18: Let's Learn About MELODY and HARMONY
In this episode, we are exploring the concepts of melody and harmony through singing and listening.
Musically speaking melody is “the succession of single tones in musical compositions, as distinguished from harmony and rhythm or the principal part in a harmonic composition; the air.”
Harmony, on the other hand, is “the simultaneous combination of tones, especially when blended into chords pleasing to the ear”
In order to teach this concept, Mimi sings a song with her daughter in which they demonstrate the difference between the melody and the harmony.
The children then have an opportunity to play a listening game in which they try to identify who is singing harmony.
Things you can do at home to familiarize your child with melody and harmony.
*at first this may seem a difficult thing for young children to grasp but you might be surprised at what they are able to identify by honing their listening skills. The following are just a couple of examples you could use.
1. Play or sing examples of familiar songs that also have harmonies. Disney musicals are brilliant for this eg: Aladdin’s “A Whole New World” (the last part) Rapuzel’s “I See the Light”, The Lion King’s “Can You Feel the Love” (which has a beautiful background chorus) the title song of Beauty and the Beast. Sing the melody line and ask your child if they recognize the harmony of the song. (Mimi’s Playtime also has songs with harmony eg: Yummy Yummy for the Tummy, The Marvellous Milky Way and Sunshine )
2. Get your child to close their eyes while they listen to a song and ask them to raise their hand when they hear the harmony.
3. Get your child to sing the melody of a familiar song and help them to identify this as the principal or main tune of the song. Then have them point out the tune of the harmony. See if they can repeat it. (this is a really tricky one but a great way to see how musically inclined your child might be!)
Don't worry if your child doesn't execute this exercise perfectly. The point is to expose them to a variety of good music, familiarize them with melody and harmony, and to find joy in the musical process!
