Your first thought would probably be that he might be conducting some weird human experiments for creating a weaponized human or some human-machine hybrid. However, you would be surprised to know most of the times these so-called crazy scientists are actually experimenting with plants. While scientists usually try and alter a crop genetically to make it more resistant to severe weather conditions or to improve the overall quality of the future crop, there are gardeners out there who try and achieve the biggest sizes in the same categories. From insanely large lemons to giant cabbages, these gardeners would seriously shock you by the end results they were able to achieve by doing experiments in their back gardens! So sit back and relax and grab some popcorn as we take you on a journey through the land of veggies and fruits that grew to abnormally huge sizes. 11. Giant Leek In 2014, Paul Rochester broke the record for the world’s biggest leek – yup you heard that right – thanks to a tip from his champion vegetable growing father. That tip, gardeners, is that the secret to growing monster-sized vegetables is to fill the greenhouse with Glenn Miller swing music. The giant leek broke the world record previously set by British vegetable grower John Pearson, who grew a leek weighing 9.2 kilograms. Rochester’s giant Glenn Miller-loving leek weighs around 9.75 kilos — apparently all the result of classic swing music and your typical food and drink. While this leek is by far the most noteworthy of Rochester’s creations, he’s a popular fixture on the vegetable growing circuit and continues to grow carrots, parsnips, cauliflower, and other vegetables. So you might be seeing this guy coming up with another huge vegetable or fruit in the coming years. 10. Watermelon Would it surprise you that the biggest watermelon ever recorded in history was heavier than an average human? Considering the average weight of humans is around 62kg, it is in no way a small figure. So are you ready to know how heavy this watermelon was? A whopping 159kg or 351 pounds, try wrapping your head around this one! US-based Chris Kent of Sevierville, Tennessee, brought in the monstrosity on Oct. 4, 2013, and got verified by the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth. Also recognized by the Guinness World Records, he received a prize – very well deserved! 9. Lemon The world& ;s heaviest lemon weighed 5.265 kg on 8 January 2003 and was grown by Aharon Shemoel on his farm in Kefar Zeitim, Israel. The lemon& ;s circumference was 74 cm and 35 cm high and it grew with another large lemon. So basically, it was two lemons that grew to the abnormal size and were almost identical. Imagine how many lemonades you can make with such a huge lemon, probably enough for the whole population of Kefar Zeitim which was last recorded to be around 778 people! 8. Grapefruit Measuring almost 29 inches in circumference, about the size of an NBA regulation basketball, the grapefruit weighed 7 pounds and 14 ounces — about the weight of an average newborn. That means the grapefruit officially broke the 2006 world record set by Brazilian growers, which was around 14 ounces lighter. The grapefruit which was created by Louisiana based couple not only holds the record for the heaviest but also has the title of the largest grapefruit by circumference. The creation not only made the couple famous globally, they also became local stars of their town when people got to know that they were recognized by the Guinness World Records. How long will they hold the record? Well nobody knows, but one thing is certain, veggie and fruit records aren’t meant to last forever and sooner or later someone will come up with a piece that outgrows this one! 7. Pineapple It stands to reason that the world’s heaviest pineapple would be grown in some kind of tropical or hot climate. There’s no other fruit in the world more associated with beaches and vacation cocktails than Earth’s spikiest fruit. And, for Christine McCallum, it’s now the world’s bulkiest fruit. In 2011, Christine McCallum broke the record for the heaviest pineapple in Australia, growing a fruit that weighed in at 8.28 kilograms — an insane weight for any fruit, really. Intriguingly, McCallum didn’t do anything particularly different with the fruit than any other, merely feeding it with water and allowing it to grow in its own time.
