Catherine Parr was born in 1512 to Sir Thomas Parr and Maud Green. While known as the “Survivor” she only outlived Henry by a year. Catherine was blessed with a good education in youth and relative freedom which perhaps impacted her world view later on. She is historically one of the most married Queen’s of England and by far the most outspoken. She was a Lady in waiting to Mary Tudor and lived through the desolution of the monasteries. She was also the first woman in England to publish a book under her own name publishing Prayers or Meditations, Lamentation of a Sinner, Psalms or Prayers, and The Spice of Wisdom. Even Jane Austen went under an aliases. Famously she enjoyed a close relationship with all of Henry’s children, but Elizabeth was her favorite. While she’s remembered as “the far from saintly nurse” she was as a matter of fact a wealthy, intellectual woman who achieved more than history gives her credit for.
