Model Minutes's video: Airfix Hawker Typhoon Ib 1 72 Scale Plastic Model Kit Full Build Review

Originally designed to be a medium to high altitude interceptor fighter, and as a replacement for the earlier Hawker Hurricane, the Typhoon was introduced to Royal Air Force service in 1941. Despite having one of the latest 2000hp Napier Sabre engines and an improved armament of originally 12 .303 inch machine guns followed by four 20mm cannons, it never lived up to the expectations. Plagued by various issues including a design error which meant a weakness in the tail had to be solved by attaching strengthening plates , and carbon monoxide seeping into the cockpit meaning the pilot had to always wear his oxygen mask, contributed to it failing to meet the specification it was designed for. It did however, excel at the low level interceptor and ground attack role, being a stable gun platform and able to carry either bombs or rockets, it took to this duty and gained a reputation as one of the Second world wars best ground attack aircraft.
