Bộ phim dựa trên cuốn tiểu thuyết ăn khách của Jacek Dukaj tên The Old Axolotl lấy bối cảnh giả tưởng khi xảy ra hiện tượng ánh sáng mặt trời bị thay đổi cực. Nó khiến cho mặt trời bây giờ trở thành cỗ máy giết người khiến tất cả sinh vật sống như bị đặt vào lò viba khổng lồ. Cách duy nhất để trốn thoát là phải luôn di chuyển về hướng Tây, nơi mặt trời không chiếu tới kịp. Một nhóm người lạ mặt, đa quốc tịch cùng nhau bước vào một hành trình vô định để tìm kiếm sự sống.
