In this lesson, we will do our first bit of editing of the course layout. If you look at the course homepage, by default, Moodle adds a "News forum" as the first item on the course layout. This is a fully functional social forum that can be of great value to your students. You can of course choose to reposition it to any other place by using it's move handle. One more thing that is done by default is the presence of an invisible label here - that you can use as a sub-title to your course or as a Welcome message to your students. I will click on the gear icon here to edit the summary of this item. The format of this page is something that you will get familiar with while editing the section's of your course in future lessons. By default, the section name is greyed out by this checkbox - and I will uncheck it first. I will use this textbox for a welcome header. I have a welcome message ready that I will paste into. In the summary text box here - I have a longer welcome message for my students - that I will paste into. And when I am done, I will click on the "Save changes" button, to return to course homepage. This page is still in editing mode. And to see exactly how this will look for students, I will turn the editing mode off. And finally, we have a very nice welcome message for our students at the very beginning of our course homepage. I will like to re-iterate that adding a welcome message is a good practice - as it will help students who are grappling with Moodle navigation for the first time to get oriented to the course homepage quickly.
