Juhi Chawla (born 13 November 1967) is an Indian actress, model, film producer, and the winner of the 1984 Miss India beauty pageant. Predominantly working in Hindi cinema, she has also appeared in Bengali, Punjabi, Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada and Telugulanguage films. One of the most popular and highest-paid Hindi film actresses of the late 1980s and 1990s, Chawla is the recipient of several accolades, including two Filmfare Awards. She has garnered particular praise for her comedic timing and vivacious on-screen persona. Chawla made her acting debut in 1986 with Sultanat, and received wider public recognition with the highly successful tragic romanceQayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), where she became the inaugural winner of the Filmfare Award for Lux New Face of the Year. She rose to prominence by starring in a number of box-office hits, including the family drama Swarg (1990), the thriller Pratibandh (1990), the romance Bol Radha Bol (1992), and the romantic comedy Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman (1992). She went on to establish herself as a leading actress of Hindi cinema by starring in consecutive top grossing films, garnering appreciation for her roles as a bar dancer in the action thriller Lootere (1993), a sacrificing woman in the romance Aaina (1993), a South Indian in the romantic comedy Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993), for which she won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress, and a victimized woman in the romantic thriller Darr (1993). Chawla achieved further success by featuring as the female lead in several box office successes, including Naajayaz (1995), Ram Jaane (1995), Deewana Mastana (1997), Yes Boss (1997), Ishq (1997) and Arjun Pandit(1999). In the 21st century, Chawla began working with independent filmmakers in art-house projects, garnering critical acclaim for her work in Jhankaar Beats (2003), 3 Deewarein (2003), My Brother Nikhil (2005), Bas Ek Pal (2006), I Am (2011), Gulaab Gang (2014) and Chalk n Duster (2016). In addition to film acting, Chawla has featured as a talent judge for the third season of the dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. She has participated in several stage shows and concert tours, and has engaged in philanthropic activities. Chawla is the co-owner of the Indian Premier League cricket team Kolkata Knight Riders. Since 1995 she has been married to industrialist Jay Mehta, with whom she has two children.
