Safe spaces are those in which we can communicate difficult thoughts and emotions and be accepted and heard. Feeling of safety is pre-requisite to the emotional vulnerability and risk-taking that nourishes relationships. Without a safe foundation for communicating difficult thoughts and emotions, we will be unlikely to experience the passion, love and joy that comes about as a result (and that represent a healthy fire energy). Because of the central importance of safety in generating fire energy, we’ve compiled a list of resources for you to explore on the topic. Each article has slightly different emphases. We hope that by providing many resources you’ll find the ones that resonate with you. We do not necessarily endorse all the positions taken by the writers; however, you’ll see common themes for safety are: 1) Boundaries with Self and Other are Pre-requisite to Safety. To Learn how to better create boundaries, as well as how to work with some of the difficult emotions that can come from doing so: https://brickelandassociates.com/healthy-boundaries-for-self-care/ 2) Practices* that strengthen your ability to sit with difficult emotions and that change your response to them (vs. heated reaction) are essential to creating safety in relationship. Take the lead and model the change you wish to see. It is very unlikely the other person will not follow suit. Communicating one’s thoughts and feelings can be scary. However, what comes from it is nourishing and rewarding. Feeling secure enough to feel one’s own emotions and brave enough to communicate them – can create a chain reaction in which the other person starts to do the same – not only because you are doing it and making it seem less scary, but also because doing so feels good – if not absolutely necessary to the health of the relationship. My teacher used to say: “A rising tide lifts all boats,” indicating that when we work on ourselves, the whole community improves with us. In “It takes one to Tango,” acclaimed writer Winnifred M. Reilly shares how taking the lead in her own relationship transformed her marriage: https://www.amazon.com/It-Takes-One-to-Tango-audiobook/dp/B06XW8W5VM *Practices that strengthen your ability to sit with difficult emotions (and change your response to them) include body-awareness exercises that help us make space between our actions and the experience of difficult emotions. One tried and true process that you can try a) notice when we are triggered b) relax by focusing on our body and softening any tension we are feeling c) when we feel ready to communicate, speak from a more relaxed place. The article listed above ( ) gives more concrete examples of this process in action.
