In fact, many today believe he was the first and only gay American President. We DO know he was the only President not to get married. He was once engaged, but there is no evidence he ever had a sexual relationship with any woman. We also know that he had a very intimate relationship with William Rufus King, a U.S. Senator from Alabama and later Vice President. They lived together for 13 years. Now, maybe that’s because both Buchanan’s and King’s relatives probably destroyed correspondence between the two? One important point to remember is that when Buchanan was alive, our modern classification of sexual orientations didn’t really exist. But most of the experts agree- there is not enough evidence to prove that Buchanan was gay, or bisexual, or pansexual, or asexual, or heterosexual for that matter.
