@Peak Oil News 7/16/13 Fukushima, Oil Train Crash and More
This is Peak Oil News. I'm your host, MrEnergyCzar. We're covering Peak Oil, Renewable Energy, Electric Cars and everything in-between. • Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/MrEnergyCzar.PeakOil • Twitter: https://Twitter.com/MrEnergyCzar • Tesla demonstrated the ability of it's Model S to swap it's battery in 90 seconds. Tesla filmed a typical person filling up their car at a gas station. During the few minutes it took the person to put gas in the car, Tesla was able to swap out the battery on two Tesla's. This shows that its actually faster and easier to swap the battery than to buy gas. You don't even have to get out of the car. Look for these Tesla battery swap stations to be along side the Supercharger stations. • An unmanned train, carrying oil in Canada, derailed causing a huge fire and deaths. Dozens of residents are still unaccounted for as the fire destroyed 30 buildings. The head of the train company said the burning oil spilled into the storm sewers and rose up through manholes causing the buildings to catch fire. • A teenager invents a flashlight powered by the heat from your hand. The 15 year old from Canada entered the Hollow flashlight into the Google science fair. One of the problems with traditional lighting sources is that they require an outside energy source. In theory, as long as a living person was holding the flashlight, it could be powered for decades. • Radiation levels skyrocket at Fukushima in Japan. It sounds like they are losing control. Radiation levels in the seawater doubled recently. This may indicate that radioactive groundwater is seeping into the Pacific ocean. Scientists are considering freezing the ground around the reactors. Japan may need more than the projected 40 years to decommission the nuclear plant. • McMansions are back. In 2012, the median size new home built was the highest in recorded history. At just over 2,300 square feet, you would think that people would realize by now that heating and cooling a McMansion in the future may become very difficult. In our wasteful culture, house size still matters, efficiency doesn't.
