Ethanol is the most popular biofuel in the world which is made mostly from sugarcane or corn. In Europe biodiesel is popular and can made from palm oil. Biodiesel can be used in diesel engines. • The problem with biofuels is that they have a very low net-energy return compared to the net-energy of our declining conventional oil resource. They are sometimes referred to as biofools because there is so much foreign oil and water used to produce them. They need fertilizers and pesticides to grow the crops along with diesel to harvest and process them. • You barely get any net-energy gain from them. Let's be clear here, this is no energy equivalent or cheaper alternative to conventional oil. Biofuels are an expected attempt to offset our declining conventional oil production. Fracking, tar sands, coal to liquids are other examples of us trying to offset our conventional oil production. We will find that you can't feed and grow our economies with these lessor energy sources. • Biofuels are less energy dense, cost more, compete with food crops and give less net-energy. Throughout history, man has replaced each energy resource with one that was higher in energy density. In regards to this we're starting to go backwards since conventional oil global oil production peaked in 2006.
