@William Wright Shoots Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Deputy
KALAMAZOO - It began around dinnertime January 6, 2012, with the sound of a 9 mm handgun being shot from a pickup truck window, with a bullet grazing the arm of a Kalamazoo County sheriff's deputy. By the time it ended some six hours later, two brothers from Kalamazoo - Christopher and William Wright - were in custody, but not before leading local police on two separate pursuits and crashing a Jeep Liberty into a house in Portage. One of the brothers also set fire to and destroyed another Portage resident's garage and made off with a 1992 Ford Tempo. "This thing was bizarre," Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Pali Matyas said. "It just kept going and going and going ... This was a very intense six hours." The incident began about 6:45 p.m. Friday after a sheriff's deputy and reserve deputy stopped a Chevrolet Silverado on East Michigan Avenue for running a red light at Sprinkle and Lake Street, investigators said. As the deputy and reserve deputy approached, someone inside the truck fired several rounds at the deputy from the truck's driver's side window. Police said the deputy and reserve deputy returned fire and shot several times at the truck, which fled east on East Michigan. The deputy was grazed on the arm by a bullet during the shootout but was not seriously injured. The reserve deputy was not hurt, authorities said. Investigators found the truck abandoned about an hour later in a neighborhood not far from the scene of the shooting. Inside the truck were several 9 mm rounds, police said. By 9 p.m. Friday, authorities had identified the Wright brothers as possible suspects and found them in Portage driving a Jeep Liberty. Police tried to stop the Liberty, which was being driven by William Wright, near Lovers Lane but Wright fled, driving the SUV off the road and into an area near Portage Northern High School's soccer field where a female passenger jumped out of the sport-utility vehicle and was arrested. Matyas said the Wright brothers continued onto Monticello Avenue where the Liberty crashed into a fence and then a house. Matyas said the brothers then ran from the Jeep Liberty to the 5700 block of Mount Vernon Avenue, north of Milham Avenue, where police found William Wright hiding in an unattached garage. They also located Christopher Wright nearby in the back of a pickup truck. "There was an army of police that had swarmed into this neighborhood," Matyas said. "Portage (police) were getting calls from people who saw them running." Matyas said that within 15 to 20 minutes after police tracked William Wright to the garage, "there was an explosion in the garage and the door flew off and the suspect somehow started a car that was in the garage." Matyas said Wright took off in a Ford Tempo at a high rate of speed through the backyard of the residence "ramming fences over" and traveling through yards on Monticello Avenue before making his way back to Idaho Avenue, South Westnedge Avenue and then eastbound I-94. Matyas said William Wright then led police on a 25-mile, high-speed chase on I-94 before he crashed near the Helmer Road exit in Calhoun County.
