It started off as a short format comedy show about King Arthur and his quest for the Holy Grail and gradually evolved into longer episodes as the tone grew more serious. Part of the humor in early seasons comes from Arthur's frustration with the characters surrounding him, who all appear far more stupid and irreverant than what we're used to in most depictions of the Arthurian legend. Their antics and their inability to fulfill the destiny that is expected of them provide great comic relief, along with Arthur's exasperation. However, that same element is also what leads Arthur to fall into a deep depression in later seasons, as he eventually attemps to kill himself. The show still ends on a more hopeful note as we watch Arthur get back up, pick up his sword and the text reads: "Soon, Arthur will be a hero again." Here we are, 10 years later, waiting for that goddamn movie trilogy.
