It is a huge game. Almost a knockout. A playoff berth is at stake and the winner takes it all. Bangalore and Delhi have both played 13 matches, won 7 and lost 6 and are separated by the thinnest of margins in Net Run Rate. They have had similar journeys in 2020 too winning more than two-thirds of their first 10 matches and then witnessing a dramatic change in fortunes losing their last 4 (Delhi) and 3 (Bangalore) matches respectively. From a team that looked assured of a playoff berth with plenty to spare to a struggling unit with three consecutive defeats, Bangalore have endured a free fall. The three-time finalists, who had a consistent run in the middle, have flattered to deceive in the business end of the Indian T20 League. Going into their final match against an equally struggling Delhi, Bangalore have their backs to the wall. With 120 runs to defend on Saturday night, they went down by five wickets to Hyderabad in a rather one-sided contest. Star batsman AB de Villiers admitted it was a terrible feeling to lose three matches on the trot and they must bring their best to the pitch against Delhi. "It's a terrible feeling to lose three in a row, you never want to do that. But that's the nature of this tournament, anything can happen. If you lose three in a row, you can win three in a row as well. The Delhi game is a big game. We're going to have to come up with our best cricket. If we do, things will look up very well for us," the South African said. De Villiers pointed to the back-to-back dismissals of Josh Philippe and himself as the turning point. "The turning point was probably when Josh and I got out back-to-back, which cost us about 20 to 30 runs. That put a lot of pressure on our middle order," he added. De Villiers heaped praise on the Hyderabad bowlers, who stuck to their plan and bowled wicket-to-wicket and varied the pace on a slow surface. That apart, their fielders too complemented their efforts in holding on to catches and cutting out the boundary bound deliveries. "Credit to them, they bowled exceptionally well. From the word go they didn't give us a lot of boundary balls. Their seamers particularly started well in the Power Play. After that, it didn't get much easier with Rashid, who didn't bowl a lot of bad balls either," pointed out De Villiers. "We weren't brave enough with the bat," Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli admitted. The batting is the main problem for both the teams. Shikhar Dhawan - Delhi's batsman of the tournament - has suddenly seen a dip in form and registered scores of 6, 0 and 0 in his last three innings. Rishabh Pant is struggling to find his destructive prowess and has a strike rate of only 87.5 in the last four matches. Marcus Stoinis and Shimron Hetmyer have not aggregated a total of 70 runs in the last 8 innings (combined). Bangalore's old headache of over dependency on AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli has come to haunt them again in the tournament. The pair have not been amongst the runs in the last couple of matches resulting in losses for their franchise. There are issues in the bowling departments too. While Kagiso Rabada - the joint-highest wicket-taker of the tournament - has gone wicketless in the last couple of matches and also been thrashed around the park, Axar Patel has been held back courtesy a number of left-handers in the opposition team. The faster bowlers of Bangalore, who had done a commendable job for the team till the first 10 matches, have also been taken for aplenty in the last three encounters - Chris Morris had been a great addition mid-way for the Bangalore - he was picking wickets and was very restrictive. But he has gone at a rate of 9.81, 9 and 9.5 in the last three matches. Mohammed Siraj, Dale Steyn and Navdeep Saini have also taken a beating.
