After a horrific campaign, Chennai, are already out of the tournament and would just play to salvage pride. On the other hand Kolkata -- with just two matches left, are on 12 points and are on fifth spot in the points table just behind Punjab, and would like to win big here. Chennai, will be ruefully heading back home after their final league game this Sunday, but they still have a chance to influence the business end of the season. With the three-time IPL champions - who are out of the playoff race - playing against Kolkata on Thursday and Punjab on Sunday, the results of these matches could potentially decide which of their two opponents makes it to the playoffs. Punjab are currently fourth in the table while Kolkata are fifth with 12 points from 12 games each. The tight situation means Kolkata have to win against MS Dhoni's boys in Dubai on Thursday and put the pressure on Punjab when they take the field against Rajasthan on Friday. For that to happen, Kolkata have to sort out their batting issues. In each of their last three matches, they have lost three wickets quickly. Kolkata will hope that the opening pair of Shubman Gill and Rana can lay the foundation for the likes of Eoin Morgan, Dinesh Karthik and Narine to capitalise on Thursday. Andre Russell - who hasn't played since October 18 due to a hamstring injury - was back in practice Wednesday, but there is no clarity on whether he will take the field against Chennai. For Chennai, it will be about giving chances to some more youngsters as they look to rebuild for the 2021 campaign. In Chennai's last game against Bangalore, Ruturaj Gaikwad finally took his chance with an unbeaten half-century. If more players can come to the fore in a situation where this no pressure on them, it might shape up into a tricky evening for Kolkata. The Chennai batting has also been patchy right through the tournament and will be tested by the Kolkata bowling unit. With the addition of pacer Lockie Ferguson in the last few matches, the Kolkata attack seems to have acquired a bit more heft. While Pat Cummins has managed only 6 wickets in 12 games, Ferguson has taken the same number of scalps in just four games. As far as spin is concerned, the pair of Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine will bowl in tandem for Kolkata. While it remains to be seen how effective Narine can be with his remodelled action, Varun's confidence must be at an all-time high after getting his maiden India call-up for the T20Is against Australia. Chennai, in their last match registered a thumping wight-wicket victory against Bangalore and youngsters like Deepak Chahar and Ruturaj Gaikwad came to the fore. They are a side capable of spoiling the campaign for Kolkata, who are struggling with their own issues galore. Batting has been their biggest struggle, while bowlers too have shone only in patches. While Shubman Gill has scored runs, his strike rate has been questionable. The likes of Nitish Rana, Eoin Morgan and Dinesh Karthik too have been inconsistent. Someone from these three will have to take up the responsibility. Speaking of bowling, Varun Chakravarthy has been rewarded for his brilliant performance in the tournament, and been named in the T20I squad for Australia tour. He will be expected to deliver the goods in the middle overs. As for Pat Cummins, as the spearhead of the pack, a lot is still left to be desired. He needs to pick up wickets up front to put pressure on the opposition. The situation for both the teams is somewhat similar, where senior pros have failed to impress, and the battle will most likely be won from the side whose youngsters perform better on the day.
