With 5 wins from 7 matches, Mumbai are at number 2 on the points table while Kolkata are at number 4 with 4 wins from 7 matches. Amazingly, Mumbai have an astonishing head to head against the two-time champions, Kolkata – they have beaten them 20 times in 26 matches – i.e a success percentage of 76.92%. Mumbai thrashed KKR by 49 runs in the first encounter between the two teams in 2020, also in Abu Dhabi. Rohit Sharma’s 54-ball 80 and Suryakumar Yadav’s 28-ball 47 helped Mumbai to 195 for 5. A good all-round bowling effort restricted Kolkata to 146 for 9. Expressing "surprise at Narine being reported for a suspect action despite having played so much cricket and having been cleared after he was last called," Kolkata left out Narine from the last game against Bangalore as another adverse report would lead to him being barred from the tournament. Kolkata subsequently missed the mystery spinner badly as they were hammered by 82 runs. The big question is, will they risk playing the West Indian tonight, or wait for the issue to be "resolved" as they said in their statement? Perhaps, one way Kolkata can look to stop MI is to recall Kuldeep Yadav, who was dropped after just three games, to partner the impressive Varun Chakravarty in the spin department, with Pat Cummins and Prasidh Krishna providing the initial breakthroughs. What gives even more of an edge to Mumbai is their well-rounded bowling attack, led by Jasprit Bumrah, perhaps the No 1 T20 bowler in the world. On a roll having won their last four games, the defending champions don't depend on just Bumrah - Trent Boult is the most successful bowler in the powerplay overs, while James Pattinson has proved his worth too. With 31 wickets in seven games, it's the most successful pace trio in the competition. Both the Mumbai spinners, Rahul Chahar and Krunal Pandya, have succeeded in keeping the pressure up and taking crucial wickets in the middle overs. On the other hand, Kolkata are beset with problems. Their Achilles heel has been the poor form of their biggest talisman, Andre Russell. Perhaps hampered by injuries, 'Dre Russ' has been a pale shadow of his devastating self, scoring a meagre 71 runs in seven games@11.83. Kolkata look a different outfit when he fires. Will he fire tonight? A win for Mumbai will take them to the top of the points table while Kolkata would be hoping to break into the top three with a win. Mumbai Mumbai have won their last 4 matches in 2020 and have ticked most of the boxes of a good all-round team. Suryakumar Yadav is their best in-form batsman with two fifties in the last two matches. He is Mumbai’s highest scorer this season with 233 runs in 7 innings at a very high strike rate of 155.33 – which means when he scores big he does so at a fair clip. Quinton de Kock is back amongst the runs too at the top of the order. Hardik Pandya though, is yet to play a Hardik Pandya type innings and Mumbai would hope that he has reserved his best for the second half of the tournament. Kolkata Kolkata were poor in their last match – the entire batting, barring Shubman Gill, collapsed. Gill has been Kolkata’s best and most consistent batsman in 2020. He is also their highest scorer with 254 runs in 7 innings. He has played the role of the anchor as his strike rate of 119.24 indicates. Eoin Morgan needs a significant performance in the middle order. The England limited overs’ specialist has been a patch of his usual self with a below par strike rate of 129.62. Andre Russell is having a bad season – he has just managed to score 71 runs in 6 innings.
