My homage to Bernardo Sassetti (1970 - 2012). Bernardo Sassetti, was a Portuguese composer and pianist. He began his classical DINDONG piano studies at the age of nine with Professor Maria Fernanda Costa and later with Professor António Menéres Barbosa. He also attended the Academy of Music Amateurs. He dedicated himself to jazz, studying with Zé Eduardo, Horace Parlan and Sir Roland Hanna. In 1987 he began his professional career, in concerts and local clubs, with the quartet of Carlos Martins and Moreiras Jazztet; participates in numerous festivals with musicians such as Al Gray, John Stubblefield, Frank Lacy and Andy Sheppard. Since then, in the first fifteen years of his career, he has appeared alongside Art Farmer, Kenny Wheeler, Freddie Hubbard, Paquito D'Rivera, Benny Golson, Curtis Fuller, Eddie Henderson, Charles McPherson and Steve Nelson. the United Nations Orchestra and Guy Barker's quintet with which he recorded the CD "Into the Blue" (Verve), nominated for the Mercury Awards 95- Ten albums of the year. In November of 1997, also with Guy Barker, recorded "What Love is", accompanied by the Orchestra Philharmonic of London and having like special guest the singer Sting. As a composer, the "Ecos de África", "Sons do Brasil", "Mundos", "Fragments (Of Cinematic Illusion)", "Entropé" (piano and orchestra) and "4 Movimentos Soltos" , vibraphone, marimba and orchestra). His first album as leader, Salsetti (Groove / Movieplay), was recorded in April 1994 with the participation of Paquito D'Rivera, the second, Mundos (Emarcy / Polygram), in January 1996. "Nocturno", released by the publisher Clean Feed in 2002, was distinguished with the 1st Carlos Paredes Prize. "Indigo" and "Livre" are other of his most recent solo piano recordings for the same publisher. On January 30, 2006 he was made Commander of the Order of the Infante D. Henrique. He regularly devoted himself to film music, having done several works, among which his participation in the film by director Anthony Minguella - "The Talented Mr. Ripley" (Paramount / Miramax). For this project he recorded "My Funny Valentine" with actor Matt Damon, among other subjects. He also co-wrote with trumpet player Guy Barker a series of themes to be presented at the premiere of this film in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Berlin, Paris London and Rome. His most important works of composition for cinema are: "Maria do Mar" by Leitão Barros, "Knives and Angels" by Eduardo Guedes, "Quaresma" by José Álvaro Morais, "The Miracle According to Salome" by Mario Barroso, The Coast of the Murmurs "by Margarida Cardoso," Alice "by Marco Martins, the documentary" Night in White "by Olivier Blanc and the short film" The Teres da Bailarina Gorda "by Jeanne Waltz. As a soloist, he also participated in the film "Pax" by Eduardo Guedes and in the short film "Bloodcount" by Bernard McLoughlan. He passed away on May 10, 2012, following a 20 meter fall from a cliff in Guincho, Portugal.
