Qinghai covers an area of 720,000 square kilometers, with towering mountains, swift rivers, clean lakes, and fertile grasslands. The snow-covered Kunlun, Tanggula, and Bayan Har mountains are well known not only in China but also in the rest of the world. Still, Qinghai's mountains and glaciers are only a small part of the beauty of its plateau. The Changjiang (Yangtze), Huanghe (Yellow), and Lancang Rivers have their sources in Qinghai, and the 4,500-square-kilometer Qinghai Lake is China's largest inland lake. The grassland is vast and filled with flocks of sheep, herds of cattle, and large areas of colorful flowers. The towering Kunlun Mountains and the vast Gobi Desert are beautiful in the glow of sunset. These natural scenes are among the special features of Qinghai Province. Qinghai is a multi-ethnic province inhabited by the Han, Tibetan, Tu, Hui, Salar, and Mongol peoples, all living together harmoniously. Each ethnic group has its own economy, history, culture, customs, and way of life. Together, the different peoples form a sort of painting of a colorful composite culture. The Tibetan Buddhism of Qinghai also has its special charm. It shows not only the belief of the Tibetan, Mongol, and Tu peoples in the true, the good, and the beautiful but also their imaginative and creative power and their knowledge of architecture, painting, sculpture, literature, medicine, astronomy, and geography. Qinghai is attractive to outsiders not only for its unique culture and natural scenery but also for the rich resources of minerals and of rare plants and animals that have put the province in a strategic position for future economic and social development. The hydropower resources on the upper reaches of the Yellow River; the oil, natural gas, and salt-lake resources in the Qaidam Basin; the deposits of ferrous and nonferrous metals, including gold, throughout the province; the potential livestock resources; and the tourist resources on the plateau provide Qinghai with exceptional advantages over other places in China with similar resources.
