Locusts are insects which belong to the same family as crickets and grasshoppers. They grow in isolation (solitary phase) but lack of rain can push individual locusts to grow. And in high densities, they undergo a phase change to the gregarious phase. This changes their habits, behavior, appearance and causes swarms to build up, which destroy agriculture crops across the world. In this video, I explain these details about locusts, their swarms and solutions to fight against them. Adding to India's woes amid the coronavirus pandemic, swarms of locusts have entered the western parts of the country. The kind of locusts swarming in India are desert locusts from the grasshopper family and are more devastating than other species of locusts. The locust attack of December 2019 in Gujarat destroyed crops spread over 25,000 hectares of land. What are locusts and why is this a worrying situation? How are the Indian farmers handling the situation and what is the government doing? Swarms of locusts have invaded vast swathes of land in India since April 11th this year. They entered several districts of Rajasthan via Pakistan’s Sindh province. This locust attack has affected about 90,000 hectares across 20 districts in Rajasthan. The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organisation, however, has warned of more such attacks along both sides of the India-Pakistan border. But for a country which is already battling a pandemic, this is yet another challenge. Indian Air Force has modified two Mi-17 helicopters to spray pesticide to deal with locust attack. It developed a pesticide spraying tool - the Airborne Locust Control System. The Chandigarh Base Repair Depot indigenously designed and developed the ALCS. It can help in spraying pesticides over 750 hectares of land in one mission.
