A home away from home for pets and animals. Sahay, an NGO, has adopted the responsibility of managing the inpatient unit of the College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry. This was stated by Homen Borgohain, an eminent intellectual, during the inaugural ceremony of the unit in Guwahati Assam. An inpatient unit under the teaching veterinary clinic campus, which is recognised as a referral unit, is set up with an objective to provide clinic-cum-shelter to the pets. "As a sign of showing love to animals, the government in France shifted the railway lines to save frogs as they were getting killed under the wheels of the train. The government in England halts traffic for animals to cross the road. We must learn to love animals to become modern and civilised," Borgohain said. "The unit has been implemented after a year of discussion with Sahay for the greater cause of animals. This is a good example of public-private programme," Assam Agricultural University vice-chancellor Kamal Malla Bujarbaruah said. Sahay works for the health and care of animals and nature. It was established in 2010. It has been entrusted with the responsibility to manage, amongst others, the interests called by the authority of college of veterinary science. "Without the mentality of selfless service to humans and nature, a government employee cannot work. Most of them just count their days of service and this is one of the reasons why most of the government institutions fail to render valuable service. Therefore, we have decided to outsource the manpower to Sahay. For a year, the unit will be managed by this group and based on the performance, we will decide the future," Bujarbaruah said. "The university, college and the clinic has a lot to do and we will perform by supporting the process of rendering service with Sahay to animals. The unit will take care of pets, big and small, and look after them once they are left by the owners while on a vacation," Bujarbaruah said. The unit will have facility for the owners to stay with their pets and a training centre in the future as a part of possible extension of such activities. "After the treatment of the animals, monitoring the health of the animals and taking care of them is of utmost important. So, this unit will bring a change in the lives of humans by increasing the love for animals," Sahay president Nandan Pratim Sharma Bordoloi said.
