Sarbananda Sonowal releases Rs 29 crore for building houses in my show. Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal released funds worth over Rs 29 crore. as the first instalment for construction of 2,643 houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna (Urban). Sonowal disbursed the amount to the beneficiaries residing in areas under different urban local bodies of the state, at a function in Guwahati Medical College hospital Auditorium. Chief Minister stated that PMAY (U), Assam was undertaking an initiative to provide houses to urban poor so that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of housing for all by 2022 could be achieved. He also said though the previous government had launched Indira Awaas Yojna for providing houses to the underprivileged rural population, rampant corruption hampered its implementation and no mechanism was there to check proper utilisation of funds by the beneficiaries. PMAY (U) had covered the urban poor who were overlooked by IAY and it had also ensured proper construction of the houses, he said. Notably, Under PMAY (U) capital subsidy of Rs 2 lakh is released in 3 instalments of Rs 1,10,000 in the 1st instalment, Rs 60,000 as 2nd instalment and Rs 30,000 as 3rd instalment after the completion of the construction. Government of India has already sanctioned 95556 PMAY (U) houses till date in the state and out of that, 35000 beneficiaries have already received instalments and started construction of their houses. The entire amount is transferred directly to the bank accounts of the beneficiaries. As per a press release, calling on the elected representatives of town committees and municipality bodies of urban areas in the state to dedicate themselves towards the cause of keeping Assam’s towns and cities clean and green, Sonowal said that beneficiaries must also take responsibility to utilise the funds properly and ensure the quality of construction of their houses. Towns and cities of the state must provide the impression of cleanliness to visitors, he said.
