Iran news in brief, January 18, 2021 Iran: Coronavirus Death Toll Exceeds 203,000 Over 203,000 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 478 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran as of Sunday afternoon local time. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 56,803 around a third of the actual figure. “There will be no general vaccination effort prior to June 10,” said the Science Secretary of the regime’s National Covid-19 Task Force on Sunday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency. In the city of Qom, the ruling mullahs kept religious sites open and continued to hold ceremonies despite specific opposition from the regime’s own experts. This led to many people losing their lives to Covid-19. “During the past few days, the number of people seeking medical care with coronavirus symptoms has increased and this is an alarm bell for the province,” said the head of the regime’s Medical Apparatus Organization on Saturday. “This increase has raised concerns that the Covid-19 spread is intensifying,” the official added, according to the Javan daily, an outlet linked to the regime’s Revolutionary Guards. Iran’s Regime Executes at Least Six Prisoners in Two Days On Wednesday and Thursday, the clerical regime hanged six prisoners in Yazd, Qazvin, Zabol, Tabriz, and Urmia. These executions were carried out to intimidate the public and to prevent the escalation of protests. On Wednesday, two brothers, Mehdi and Muharram, were hanged in Ardabil Province after spending six years in prison. On the same day, Saber Khoshkar, 27, and Jama Daroo-Zehi were also executed in Tabriz and Zabol, respectively. On Thursday, January 14, Reza Shirzadeh and Shamsuddin Soleimani were hanged in Yazd and Qazvin prisons, respectively. The Iranian Resistance urged the United Nations and human rights organizations to take urgent action to save the lives of prisoners on death row, and to send an international inquiry team to visit Iran prisons and meet with prisoners.
