Iran news in brief, January 22, 2021 Iran: Coronavirus Death Toll Surpasses 204,600 Over 204,600 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 478 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran as of Thursday. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 57,150 around a third of the actual figure. “We are always concerned about a return of a heavy Covid-19 wave. A severe coronavirus wave may return,” said regime Health Minister Saied Namaki on Thursday. “We are facing a shortage in hospital beds while dealing with this crisis with 1.6 hospital beds for each 1,000 people. This doesn’t match even the weakest European country in the fight against Covid-19,” he added, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency. “Conditions will most definitely become worse and this time around we will not be able to overcome the status quo,” said Deputy Health Minister Iraj Harirchi on Thursday. “Our hospitals and medical professionals have their own problems,” he added, according to the Mehr news agency, an outlet linked to the regime's Ministry of Intelligence and Security. Protests Continue in Numerous Iranian Cities On Wednesday, workers of the Oil Company in the city of Gachsaran, held a rally in front of the company’s headquarters, protesting delayed paychecks. Municipal workers in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province held a rally in front of the governor's office on Wednesday, seeking answer for their demands from local officials. On Wednesday, workers of the Cement Company in the city of Dehloran, Khuzestan province, held a rally in front of the factory, protesting delayed wages. Also, on Wednesday, teachers from all over the country gathered in front of the Majlis in Tehran to draw regime officials’ attention to their dilemmas. In their protest rally, contract teachers demanded official employment status and other outstanding requests being fulfilled.
