Iran news in brief, January 14, 2021 U.S. Sanctions Foundations Controlled by Iran Regime’s Supreme Leader The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control on Wednesday sanctioned two organizations, along with their leaders and subsidiaries, controlled by the Supreme Leader of Iran, the Execution of Imam Khomeini’s Order and Astan Quds Razavi. “These institutions enable Iran’s elite to sustain a corrupt system of ownership over large parts of Iran’s economy,” said the U.S Secretary of Treasury Steven Mnuchin. “The United States will continue to target those who enrich themselves while claiming to help the Iranian people,” he added. "These institutions enable Iran’s corrupt leaders to exploit a system of ownership over a wide range of sectors of Iran’s economy. Iran: Coronavirus Death Toll Exceeds 200,100 Over 201,100 people have died of the coronavirus across Iran, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran as of January 13. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 56,457 around a third of the actual figure.
