His experience in consulting, development, and training is far reaching, spanning Europe, the Middle East, Asia & Oceania. David researches, teaches, and guest lectures on service management, sustainability, and destination management related topics. David was involved in writing the UNWTO’s “Journey to 2030” report, for the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, focusing on the private sector’s contributions to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Prof. Dr. Melvin Samsom is the Head of the Health & Wellbeing and Biotech Sector at NEOM. In his role as Head of Sector in Health & Wellbeing, he is responsible for the design and implementation of NEOM’s ambitious strategy to create the healthiest place in the world, which focuses on both pro-active preventative care and helps define world-class treatment of disease. While as the Head of Sector in Biotech, Samsom is responsible for the strategy to address the world’s greatest health needs by harnessing the latest in biotechnology and connecting the greatest minds through the NEOM Biotech hub. In addition, Melvin Samsom is a non-executive director of Bupa, a global operating health insurance and health care provider operating across 5 continents. Previously, Melvin Samsom was the Chief Executive Officer of Karolinska University Hospital in Sweden, and under his leadership a new operating model focused on the patient journey was designed and implemented, while the commissioning of one of the world’s largest and most technologically advanced hospital buildings was completed. Before Melvin came to Sweden, he served as the CEO and CMO of the Radboud University Medical Center in the Netherlands, during which he steered a large turnaround of the organization. Melvin Samsom has had a distinguished career also as a gastroenterologist, a scientist and as an administrator. He has a professorship in gastroenterology and has received a prestigious personal grant from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has conducted research at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Australia and the Mayo Clinic in the United States, as well as in the University Medical Center Utrecht in the Netherlands.
